1. What made you decide to take this management position?
After I graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelors of Science in nursing as a new graduate upon Applying for jobs in the Tampa area Faced with the economic crisis limited job availability and lack of experience I was not able to find a job based on my education and knowledge. I applied for a position as a floor nurse at a particular nursing home which did not required a Master level of education. Yet to begin a new career and gain knowledge in the field I accepted the position. Once an opportunity became available I applied for unit Manager position based on my education. My decision to take management position was based on my education alone. I had no experience in leadership role but believed that my knowledge provided strong background for this position.
2. How have you provided leadership with this position?
The Social Services Department in Whispering Oaks Nursing home includes Director of Social Services and the assistant. This position has many responsibilities and immense case load as a Department Head and a social worker in the facility. Director recommends staffing and funding requirements in connection with budget planning and also responsible for recommending casework policies and procedures in accordance with agency policies. Leader responsible for planning coordinating and supervising the performance as well as for coordinating the functions of all casework technical and related staff assigned to the social services division including their training and development. The leader ensures the smooth and pro-active intake and discharge of patience to and from the facility complete initial assessments and discharge planning for all residents coordinate discharge planning and assist families and residents with nursing home adjustment develops a working relationship with private and public social health and welfare resources in the community. Director also has responsibility for handles resident concerns and assists residents in a respectful and non-judgmental manner fostering independence and self-determination. The Social Services Director also responsible for maintaining resident records per federal and state regulations.
3. What other management positions have you had in the past?
In the past on multiple occasions I was offered management positions in different settings. However to become a good leader one needs to possess certain characteristics be knowledgeable and committed himself to certain challenges that come with the leadership position. Therefore it was declined by me many times due to some uncertainties lack of experience and self-confidence. Anyone can be a leader but it takes special person with special skills to be a good one.
4. What do you think makes a good leader in nursing?
Good leader in any settings and in the nursing home particularly needs to have a range of knowledge such as policies and procedures related to the agency as well as Medicare/Medicaid nursing skills state law about advance directives and various psychosocial techniques to promote healthy environment in the department. Leader needs to create a healthy balance between the nursing personnel and the residents between administration and the staff members and also be an advocate for the department staff and resident as well.
5. What do you consider your three greatest leadership skills?
To be a good leader one needs to have certain education knowledge and ability to work effectively and oversee activities or tasks in the department. Leader needs to posses ability of effective problem solving interpersonal communication and ethical practice. One greatest leadership skill is able to listen and not being afraid to ask opinions of the co-workers instead of makes independent decisions. Secondly good leader is comfortable to make mistakes and acknowledge the wrongdoing. Finally remain professionalism in any situation and under any circumstances.
6. What have been the challenges of this current leadership position?
Due to budget constrain many nursing homes eliminate some positions and distribute case load on lesser workers putting leaders not only overseeing department but also carry a case load as a regular worker. The Nursing Department has many challenges due to this change. For example Director has to provide therapeutic interventions to the resident and there families work on discharge planning but at the same time be prepared for meetings presentations and conferences. Another challenge that I face as being a part of management in a nursing home setting is dealing with various people from different cultures economical status and level of education which creates many challenges on a daily basis. Different people are dealing differently with there illness and physical limitations. Also they have many psychosocial stressors that nursing management have to assist with. Yet one has to maintain professionalism and good ethics in order to avoid conflict within the facility along with confrontational family members.
7. How would you describe your leadership style?
There are three leadership styles such as authoritarian democratic and free reign or delegative. The good leader possesses all of the styles depending on the situation and type of assignment. Yet each of us has tendency to lean toward one or the other. Due to large case load and limited time delegative style is predominant in Social Services Department.
