INTRODUCTION This paper will discuss the four metaparadigm concepts consisting of person health nursing and environment as it relates to the philosophy of nursing. It will briefly describe St. Petersburg college values and beliefs of nursing a long with Adams values and beliefs along with three common and three different elements between St. Petersburg College and Adams philosophy of nursing.
PERSONAL BELIEF
Adams philosophy of nursing is based upon and impacted by her work experience consisting of geriatric care med surg and clinical reimbursements specialists is the bulk of Adams nursing experience which has contributed to the growth of Adams nursing values and beliefs.
PEOPLE
People are unique individuals; ones own experience during the course of his or her life is what makes us all different from one another which results into different personalities attitudes behaviors careers and beliefs which makes them who they are as a person. People have ill rational power and personal beliefs that affect self and others.
HEALTH
Adams believes health is being free from illness and the entire body and mind is functioning in a normal manner. Unfortunately health is beyond the individuals control it is forever changing on a day to day basis throughout his or her life span we all have encountered this experience of illness and well being however this is a normal process.
NURSING
Nursing is honesty compassion teaching delegating and providing good quality care to improve health and well being. Nursing must commence a plan of care to assist the individual in reaching his or her highest potential and highest level of function. Nursing must provide care to each individual who cannot provide care to them self at time of illness.
ENVIRONMENT
The environment is his or her surroundings; it is an important concept that provides stimulants and an environment affect every one in many different ways. It influences personalities professions social needs and physical well being any fluctuation within these traits can and will cause an imbalance in a persons health. There is also an internal environment that some of us dont even think about this is where health is deeply considered with that said both internal and external environment can affect an individuals over all health.
REACHING OUT
An individual in need of a blood transfusion due to severe anemia but her religious beliefs is against this type of procedure this particular individual wanted to know if there was an alternative method the author had done some research and provided the individual with reading materials of other alternatives he or she then asked if the doctor could be notified of him or her wanting to go another route and his or her wishes were granted. This individual was very grateful for this author taking that extra step providing comprehensive care and showing concerns.
PROMOTES AND SUPPORTS
The concept of nursing allows me to deliberate a more purposeful action by providing comprehensive care and compassion to others at his or her time of illness. It allows me to bring in a since of togetherness within the medical field no matter what unit or area of nursing a person may be involved in or clinical practice. Nursing brings forth a since of well being stability and equilibrium among a potentially unbalance structure. The key factor to nursing is education first. Education of the staff in their approach also educating the patient and their loved ones on management and / or prevention.
THE AUTHORS VIEW
St. Petersburg College identification of humans; they believe humans consist of an individual community and family. Beliefs that people are holistic beings which can be affected by his or her environment and that the experiences they endure throughout theyre life causes different personalities attitudes and behaviors that defines them as a person (SPC).
HEALTH AS SPC EXPLAIN
The authors analysis on how St. Petersburg college of nursing defines health is that each individual is responsible for obtaining and reaching theyre own optimal level of function. He or she must be capable of adjusting to multiple changes regarding health in order to sustain balance and holistic well being (SPC).
SPC BELIEFS ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
The authors take on St. Petersburg college expression of the environment an environment has many different cultures beliefs and religious practice containing a variety of professions and educational back grounds. NURSING AT SPC
Adams interpretation of St. Petersburg College and nursing. They believe nursing is a profession concerned with human responses to alterations in physical mental and spiritual health (SPC 2010).
Nursing is responsible for promoting and maintaining health using the nursing process of assessment planning implementing and evaluation
(SPC).
COMMON ELEMENTS
There are three common elements the two philosophys share one common element is that a persons environment has a huge impact on his or her life choices that will affect them in more than one way. Another common element is that nursing is responsible for theyre own actions and to develop skills to provide each individual with good quality care. Lastly they share the same view regarding health as being a state of well being and free from diseases.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO
St. Petersburg College of nursing philosophy believes each individual is responsible for reaching his or her own functional level of health where as Adams philosophy believes nursing has a responsibility to assist the individual in reaching theyre highest level of function during time of illness. St. Petersburg College also believes people learn to cope with and relate to self and others for his or her own personal gain. Adams on the other hand believes people interact and come in contact with other as they can learn from others and to for fill social needs it is one of Maslows Hierarchys of needs to sustain life.
VALUES AND BELIEFS
St. Petersburg College values and beliefs are non-negotiable regarding nursing; some of SPC values are caring quality care education and professionalism they believe nursing is a profession of its own and that health is his or her own responsibility. The values of Adams consist of caring compassion education and continuity of care another belief of Adams is that his or her environment drives each individuals life paths differently.
In conclusion nursing plays a very big part in the health care industry it is a very demanding and yet challenging career hoping that others will view this as a profession just as the nursing professionals.

PHILOSOPHY
The Nature of Human Beings and the Society in Which They Live
The nursing faculty believes that people are interactive holistic beings consisting of a physical body mind and the individuals spirituality; all of which influence and are affected by the physical and social environments in which they live. Contemporary societies are aggregates of culturally diverse persons who coexist in communities. These communities evidence dynamic interpersonal and institutional relationships such as those expressed through family communication religious beliefs and practices diverse professional and educational backgrounds technological advancements and governmental practices. Among the factors that influence these relationships are thoughts values practices and codes of living. People learn to nurture to develop and to relate to self and others for the purposes of accomplishing personal and social goals. These goals are actualized through interpersonal and group interaction.
The Nature of Health and Health Care
As holistic beings people strive for homeodynamic balance. We believe that health is an individual perception that includes dimensions within the body mind spirit and environment. Health is each persons individual responsibility to the level that the individual is capable. The facilitation of wellness care requires consideration of the individual the family and the community. The degree of health is based on an individuals perception and on the level of alteration in physical mental and/or spiritual status and on the environment. The degree of health is measured by the acuity of any diagnosed disease and the burden of perceived illness otherwise known as suffering. The greater the suffering the more complex the issues associated with healing the physical body; impacting the physical and social environment; and healing the body mind and spirit.
The nature of health care is an evolving system exacting new competencies and demands on all individuals families local and global communities as well as the providers of health care. Nurses must be prepared to meet these needs and challenges within an open and complex system of caring.
The Nature of Nursing
Nursing as a profession is concerned with human responses to alterations in physical mental and spiritual health in order to prevent and alleviate suffering. Nursing practices and behaviors are research and knowledge driven for the purposes of promoting and maintaining health and wellness. Nurses utilize a critical thinking problem solving approach called the Nursing Process to identify client needs for support and/or intervention. Nurses establish outcomes with the client and members of the health care team. Nurses also participate in the planning and implementation of nursing strategies including monitoring direct care teaching and collaboration and outcome evaluation.
Nurses accept responsibility and are accountable for their actions as defined by established standards of nursing practice. Through evidence-based nursing practices clinical and cultural competencies and high ethical standards dignified care is provided to all clients regardless of health problems personal attributes or socio-economic status. Nurses administer care via empathetic and compassionate client interactions by demonstrating professional advocacy and safety consistent with the evolving demands of the health care environment.
The Nature of Nursing Education Teaching and Learning
Scholarship the demonstration of systemized knowledge and expertise in academic teaching enables faculty to facilitate student learning. Essential concepts and principles derived from natural behavioral and technological sciences provide an educational foundation for critical thinking problem solving and ethical decision making. These dimensions form the knowledge base required to practice nursing. Students relate and apply these fundamental concepts and principles to nursing theory and practice. The curriculum is supported and enhanced by a learning environment that is complimented by advanced technology.
Learning is a creative process that progresses through levels of complexity. The discovery of new ideas and the application of newly acquired knowledge can assist the learner in understanding such complexities. Learning occurs independently and collaboratively through individual and group interaction. Learners are unique individuals with previously acquired knowledge experience beliefs attitudes and behaviors who discover their potential for self-actualization through the learning process.
The faculty believes that preparation for nursing practice is a creative dynamic process that occurs within a system of higher learning. This system provides opportunities to increase knowledge in nursing theory and practice through a variety of teaching and learning modalities such as distance education classroom activities simulated laboratories clinical laboratories and preceptor-enhanced clinical experiences. Each learning activity is designed to prepare the graduate for the challenges of nursing practice and the evolving demands of the health care environment.
The learning process ensures faculty and learners will establish a collaborative trusting caring and ethical relationship. This relationship is intended to foster growth and accountability and enable students to meet program objectives as well as individual educational goals. Faculty communicates expected standards of performance requisite knowledge skills and attitudes. Faculty also establishes a reasonable time frame for effecting learning outcomes; demonstrates validity and reliability of instruction; and exhibits fairness in supervision and evaluation. Faculty members serve as role models instructors evaluators mentors and co-learners in the learning process. By providing opportunities for students to identify and express their own learning needs faculty members assist students to meet specific objectives within a prescribed time frame. Students are expected to be self-directed and to be responsible and accountable for active participation in their own learning as evidenced through study practice professional dialogue with faculty and self-evaluation. Learning outcomes are evaluated by the students ability to demonstrate and communicate expected learning outcomes.
At the associate degree level nursing education is directed toward enabling students to develop a professional attitude and the knowledge skills and behaviors necessary for the ethical practice of nursing in settings where policies and procedures are specified and guidance is available. The role of the associate degree nurse includes (1) provider of care (2) teacher (3) counselor (4) manager and (5) member of the discipline of nursing. As a member of the multidisciplinary health team the graduate is involved in providing and managing care for a select number of clients. Teaching and counseling efforts are viewed as integral components of the outcome-directed collaborative nurse-client relationship. As a member of the discipline of nursing the associate degree nurse actively participates with others in promoting and maintaining health and wellness.
The baccalaureate degree graduate is prepared to function as a (1) provider of care (2) designer manager and coordinator of care and (3) member of the profession of nursing. The understanding of research outcomes and the implementation of research-based practice are an integral part of the baccalaureate nurses professional practice. The BSN graduate also promotes the health of the family and the community and understands both the family and the community as a cli
